In decades past, kneeboards were more maneuverable by far than regular boards, were easier to fit into tight sections on the wave, and were the vehicle of choice at some of the world's gnarliest breaks, including the Wedge and Big Rock in California, and Shark Island in Australia.

We’d come for a family wedding in County Cavan, and spent a few days exploring the “Irish Lake District” in neighbouring County Fermanagh.

It was July, but the wood-burner was going ding-dust, crackling and hissing as it threw heat into the kitchen of the cottage we had rented. The window framed a view more grey than green, and the horizon was a smudge of low-hanging clouds. While much of the was frazzled from heat exhaustion, County Fermanagh had yet to catch the sun.

I texted a picture of the wood burner in full flame to a Fermanagh friend. His response was swift: “Ha! The locals say that for six months of the year Lough Erne is in Fermanagh, but for the other six months Fermanagh is in Lough Erne.”

I knew what he meant. The road to the cottage, in Belleek, literally drove us through Lower Lough Erne, across Boa Island, before delivering us back on to the shoreline.
